This paper investigates the error resilience capability of JPEG2000, for image transmission in a DS-CDMA environment. The processing gain is exploited to achieve a two class bitstream segmentation, able to yield a given Quality of Service (QoS) level also in the presence of severe noise conditions. Both the error resilience tools included in the standard and the possibility of improving the QoS through unequal error protection are exploited. The results show that unequal processing gain is a useful and viable tool for reliable transmission of images in a wireless environment. © 2001 IEEE.
